Patroness ‘role model in faith’

Joe Fakhr, school captain of De La Salle College, Ashfield, reads prayers during the Mass

Our Lady Help of Christians, Patroness of Australia, was a role model in faith, service, prayer and strength, the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr George Pell, told a Mass on her feast day at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Fourteen hundred students from Years 10 and 11 of 54 Catholic high schools in the archdiocese were at the Mass, which was organised by the Sydney Catholic Education Office. Last year’s Mass featured primary students.

The Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Pell supported by two priests, Fr Christopher Ford, principal of St John Bosco College, Engadine, and Fr Paul Smithers, of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Sefton.

Dr Pell said in his homily that Australia needed leaders who knew Christ’s teaching and could bring the benefits of that into public life.

The Mass began with a procession of all the banners of the Catholic high schools involved.

Some students sang in a choir, some played musical instruments and some were involved in the offertory procession and the prayers of the faithful.
