Pope gives $10m aid

Pope John Paul II gave about $A10 million in disaster relief and development projects in 2002, says the Vatican’s co-ordinating agency for charitable donations.

The Pontifical Council Cor Unum said the Pope gave about $A3 million in 2002 disaster relief, almost double the previous year’s amount.

The largest amount he gave - about $A2 million - was earmarked for victims of war and terrorism in 18 countries.

About $A4 million went to the John Paul II Sahel Foundation to combat desertification and boost clean water resources in Africa.
