New courses planned on Scripture, Catechism

The Catholic Adult Education Centre of the Sydney Archdiocese has announced two new courses for the coming months, on Scripture and on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Scripture course, which deals with the readings for Ash Wednesday and the Sundays of Lent and Easter, will be given by Marist Br Brian Beggs, who gave two popular scripture courses at the centre last year.

The seven-session course - 9.30-11am on Thursdays at the Catholic Centre, 3 Keating St, Lidcombe - begins on February 27. The fee is $20.

The director of the centre, Fr John Flader, says the Scripture course will be of particular interest to people involved in Lenten programs.

He will give the Catechism course, which begins on Wednesday, April 2. It follows three courses on the Catechism which attracted about 180 people last year.

This year's course will cover Part III of the Catechism, Life in Christ, in 10 sessions.

Topics to be considered include the dignity of the human person, man's calling to holiness, human freedom, the morality of the passions, conscience, virtues and sin and grace, as well as specific moral questions following the outline of the Ten Commandments.

The classes run from 7.30-9.30pm, with a break for coffee and tea. Participants are given a comprehensive set of notes at the beginning of each evening.

There will also be daytime sessions on Fridays (10am-12noon) from April 4.

The course is part of a series studying the whole of the Catechism over two years. It should be of special interest to young people, parents, catechists, teachers, people involved in Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) programs and non-Catholics interested in knowing what Catholics believe.

The classes are taped; the tapes and notes are on sale at the Catholic Adult Education Centre.

The fee for the course is $25.

If you require further information or wish to attend either course, call the Catholic Adult Education Centre on 9643 3660.
