Chinese New Year revels will aid bushfire victims Around $120,000 has been raised by Chinese community organisations in NSW to assist victims of drought and bushfires. It is the first time that members of the Chinese community from all political and cultural backgrounds have come together to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The money raised will go directly to the NSW Community Disaster Relief Fund. Guests at the New Year celebrations were entertained by a combined choir from the Australian Taiwanese Friend-ship Association, the Chinese Migrants Welfare Association, the Yellow River Choir, the Hua Sheng Chorus and the Chinese Catholic Community singing a stirring rendition of I Still Call Australia Home. Dr Peter Wong, president of the Australian Chinese Charity Foundation, says: "It was a fantastic night which saw people from different religious backgrounds such as Catholic, Buddhist and Protestant come together ... a chance for everyone to affirm their love for Australia and express sympathy for the drought and bushfire victims. "The Year of the Ram signifies a year of peace and prosperity, and the Chinese community wishes to extend this greeting to everyone." More than 80 Chinese community groups were involved.
