Scholarship honours Fr Les

A pharmacy scholarship has been launched to honour Fr Les Cashen’s contribution to St John’s College at the University of Sydney.

A memorial Mass has been held in conjunction with a dinner to launch the scholarship.

Fr Les, who was a pharmacist before his ordination to the priesthood in 1958, enjoyed great respect as the founder of the National Association of Pharmacy Students of Australia.

In his homily at the Mass, Fr Dennis Rochford, dean of chapel at the college, said Fr Les was a wise mentor.

“He had an irrepressible desire to engage with contemporary life that sprang from his Catholic faith,” he said.

“But this should not submerge the deeply traditional man whose faith and love of the Church was deep and life-sustaining.

“Fr Les held on to the words of St Paul: ‘I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish’,” he said.

“He was very much a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney; a friend to Australian priests; dedicated to students; national director of the Catholic Inquiry Centre and pastor to the people of Lane Cove, Forest Lodge, Pyrmont and elsewhere.

“St John’s College has remembered him well and with gratitude.”

Fr Les Cashen was resident vice-rector of the college for four years and rector for 12.

He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours this year for his service to the Catholic Church, recognising his special contribution in education and in the administration of the college

Fr Les died on April 12 after a heart attack. He was 77.
