12 years as rector at St John’s

Fr Les Cashen (pictured) was “a man of commanding presence, he was good at handling people and had a wry sense of humour”, says Michael Connors, former chairman of the St John’s College council at the University of Sydney.

Fr Les, 77, parish priest of Pyrmont and Forest Lodge since 1999, died on April 12 after a heart attack.

He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours this year for his service to the Catholic Church, recognising his special contribution in education and in the administration of St John’s College at Sydney University.

He was resident vice-rector of the college for four years and rector for 12. In 1991 he was elected rector emeritus and received an honorary Masters of Philosophy degree from the university.

Fr Les, who was ordained in 1958, was chairman of the board of The Catholic Weekly from 1987-1998.
