New Melbourne bishop

Pope John Paul II has appointed the Vicar-General of the archdiocese of Melbourne, Mons Christopher Charles Prowse, as an auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese.

The Archbishop of Melbourne, Archbishop Denis Hart , said the appointment would take effect immediately.

Bishop-elect Prowse, 49, was ordained a priest in 1980.

His ordination as bishop will take place in St Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday, May 19.

He has been given the titular see of Bahanna.
