Madonna in Prayer

The stunning devotional work pictured above is on display until June 30, but you’ll have to travel to Melbourne to see it.

The 17th century painting, Madonna in Prayer, the latest acquisition by the National Gallery of Victoria, portrays Mary’s qualities of tenderness and love.

The director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Dr Gerard Vaughan, describes the work – by Sassoferatto (Giovanni Battista Salvi) – as a fine, almost sculptural painting with close attention to detail and a masterful sense of colour.

Dr Vaughan says that “images of the Madonna held a special attraction during the Counter Reformation when the Catholic Church reinforced devotion to the Virgin Mary”.
