‘Team effort’ needed on social justice proposals

The dioceses “need to take responsibility for implementing the Social Justice Statement (2000)”, says Geraldine Hawkes, chair of the Commission for Australian Catholic Women.

She told the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference that a team effort was required to achieve the aims of the statement, an effort in which the bishops work as captains and the commission functions as the coach helping develop strategies.

The bishops’ proposals include developing programs to promote the equality and dignity of women and ensuring a balance of men, women, clergy, religious and laity is included on existing councils, organisations and advisory bodies.

Ms Marita Franklin, the director of Catholic Communications, is the commission’s contact in the Sydney archdiocese.
