Charity uncorks a real winner: I’ll drink to that

By Kathleen Carmody

We all know that drinking red wine can protect you against heart disease and white wine can improve lung capacity, but did you know that drinking wine can now benefit disadvantaged communities all over the world?

‘Wine Aid’ is an initiative of Catholic Mission that allows wine lovers to enjoy a variety of quality wines at affordable prices while helping to support health, hygiene, nutrition and literacy programs in 160 developing countries and in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in remote areas of Australia.

Each case of wine bought through Wine Aid generates a $12 donation to Catholic Mission which is directed towards such programs as education, literacy and self-development for adults and children;

agricultural resources and equipment; schools, orphanages, health clinics, churches and presbyteries; education and training for church and lay leaders; and supporting local church communities in remote areas of Australia.

By signing up to the Wine Aid quarterly plan you receive either a mixed dozen or a special 16-pack every three months, delivered free, with prices guaranteed not to rise until January 2003. You automatically become a member at no extra cost.

Along with the tasting notes for all the different wines, Wine Aid recipients also receive a brief update of the communities Catholic Mission is supporting and an annual field report with photos of projects your membership has helped.

Mark Lees, of Catholic Mission, says Wine Aid has really taken off. It will be launched nationwide next month.

Wine Aid offers a choice of two packs: the Mission 16 or the Partner’s Dozen.

The Mission 16 pack ($149.95) features two bottles each of eight wines, which include the 2000 Deakin Estate Shiraz, the Milburn Park Cabernet Sauvignon 1998, the Hillsview Langhorne Creek Chardonnay Verdelho 2000, and Chambers Creek Chardonnay 2000.

The Partners Dozen ($134.96) offers a superb range of varieties and flavours, including a 1999 Cranswick Nine Pines chardonnay, a 1998 Riddoch Coonawarra Semillon, a 1998 Basedows Barossa Chardonnay, a 2000 Grant Burge Oakland Cabernet Shiraz and a 2000 Arrowfield Shiraz Merlot.

Large corporations like law firms have been quick to sign up, Mr Lees says. About 325 groups are involved so far.

“We thought it was going to be a long hard slog,” he says, “but we’ve found that we’ve really touched a nerve and it’s going to be a lot easier than we thought.

“(People) still see tremendous value in the work of the Church in that mission perspective … and in that respect it has given us a real high.”
