... with grace by His Grace?

Dinner for six with Archbishop George Pell in his home fetched $475 at a recent auction to raise funds for young people going to World Youth Day.

The dinner and auction attracted more than 250 people and raised more than $8000 for 14 young people in the St George deanery heading for Toronto for World Youth Day next month.

Nicole Hellyer, the youth worker at Penshurst parish, and Jenni Winters, who is on the Sydney Archdiocese World Youth Day pilgrimage committee, co-ordinated the night with the help of the young adults who were going to benefit.

Club Menai, the Catholic club, provided its function room free of charge.

The raffle prizes and auction items included signed racing silks donated by racehorse trainer Gai Waterhouse, football jerseys and memorabilia signed by the St George-Illawarra and Canterbury-Bankstown rugby league teams, a child’s bike and a cutlery set.

“It was really beautiful. It was amazing, we didn’t expect to raise that much at all,” says Nicole. “What was great to see was the support that people were giving us.

“Going to World Youth Day is making a statement to the world that we are excited about celebrating and learning more about our faith and are open to sharing it. The support we have received from our family, friends and parishioners has meant so much to us as they are encouraging

us as young people not to be afraid of sharing it with others.”

The dinner with Dr Pell at Cathedral House went to the Vaux family of Peakhurst parish.

The young adults helped by the evening are David and Daniel Andreallo (Como/Oyster Bay), Brione Craven and Damian Kerr (Peakhurst), Louise Wilson (Revesby), John Baty, Elizabeth Hughes and Minh Anderson (Kingsgrove), Chris Nolan, Catherine Hellyer, Alizah Nelson, Melissa Imperial, Robert Toscano and Nicole Hellyer (Penshurst).
