Pilgrims walk to shrine
The inaugural pilgrimage walk from St Mary’s Cathedral to the Shrine of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Waterloo, will take place on Sunday, July 14. The pilgrims will be blessed by the Dean of the Cathedral, Mons Tony Doherty, before departing from the main steps at midday. The church of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, in Kellick St, Waterloo, was declared a Sydney Archdiocesan Shrine by Archbishop Dr George Pell earlier this year. Its stained glass window made in 1957 (pictured) depicts Our Lady and the Child Jesus displaying the scapula, plus Carmelite saints, including St Simon Stock. The shrine is on a hill once called Hungry Hill but since renamed Mt Lachlan in honour of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Established by Australia’s first Catholic bishop, Archbishop John Bede Polding in 1859, the church and its primary school (1858) has served generations of local Catholic, non-Catholic, indigenous and non-indigenous residents. Parish priest Fr John Knight, Fr Paul Maunder, Fr Peter Dowd, representatives of the Carmelite Order and more than 200 pilgrims attended the inaugural Mass held this month. A votive Mass of Our Lady of Mt Carmel is celebrated at 10am on the first Saturday each month; the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 3pm on the first Sunday, concluding with Benediction. People interested in being in the pilgrimage walk must register with Fr John Knight on 9698 2869.
