St Pio – newest saint

A giant portrait of Padre Pio looked down on the crowd in St Peter’s Square as Pope John Paul II declared that Padre Pio, a southern Italian priest who died in 1968, aged 81, had been inscribed “in the annals of the saints”.

He will “be honoured with devotion among the saints” as St Pio of Pietrelcina (his birthplace). His feast day will be September 23.
