Mass, homilies draw record hits to site

By Marilyn Kerjean

People logging on to the Archdiocese of Sydney website to check the latest local Mass times and read Archbishop George Pell’s homilies contributed to a record number of hits to the site during April.

The website, www.sydney.catholic.org.au, received 254,594 hits during April, compared with the monthly average of 231,001 hits.

Parish priests can now post updated information, including Mass times, contact details, photos and parish news to a section of the website themselves; these are the pages most people go to. Next most popular is the St Mary’s Cathedral information page.

The latest figures are “a phenomenal result for a religious-based website”, says Marita Franklin, director of Catholic Communications.

She says many visitors to the site are people from overseas who are planning trips to Sydney and who can inquire where and when they can attend Mass here.

The site for the St Therese of Lisieux relics tour, www.carmelite.com/therese2002, received a total of 700,000 hits while the relics were here, through February, March and April.
