Bid to save refugee family

The Justice and Peace Promotions office for the Sydney archdiocese, the Muslim Women’s Association and Just and Fair Asylum have banded together to come to the rescue of a refugee family in danger of being returned to the Villawood detention centre after being discharged with a bridging visa.

Now they are appealing to parishes for urgent financial assistance.

The family was in the care of a welfare group which was asked by Immigration Department officers to support them, particularly with rent, for 10 weeks. After three months, though, the group was unable to keep supporting them.

The case then came to the attention of the three organisations, who decided to band together to take responsibility for the family, particularly in fundraising to provide their rent so that the children do not have to return to detention.

“We hope to get enough assistance to be able to help this family for as long as is needed,” says Sr Aileen Crowe, the Justice and Peace Promoter for the archdiocese.
