Caritas set to hit $6m target

Caritas Australia looks set to reach its target of raising more than $6 million through Project Compassion in 2002.

The appeal has already raised $5.5 million, with the Sydney archdiocese alone raising more than $1 million, and money is still coming in.

Project Compassion is Caritas Australia's annual Lenten fund-raising appeal.

Last year it raised $5.8 million, so in 2002 the bar was raised to $6 million.

This theme was A place to call home.

Funds raised through Project Compassion will go towards health, nutrition and hygiene, poverty, illiteracy and environmental programs in developing countries.

The national director of Caritas Australia, Jack de Groot, says the agency is very pleased at the extraordinary generosity of the Australian Catholic community.

“While Australia has recently battled to know how to respond to the needs of refugees, this outstanding support for Caritas Australia’s annual fund-raising appeal demonstrates an act of compassion and true solidarity for those searching for a home,” Mr de Groot said.
