Church unity theme for cardinal at Ryde mayor’s prayer breakfast

Cardinal Edward Cassidy (pictured) will be guest speaker at the 11th annual Mayoral Community Prayer Breakfast at Ryde Civic Hall on Friday, August 16.

The theme of his address will be The Church – Unity in Diversity.

The mayor of Ryde, Cr Ivan Petch, will host the breakfast, which celebrates the Christian faith within the Ryde community.

It has become an annual event since its inception as part of the city’s Bicentenary celebrations in 1992.

Cardinal Cassidy was ordained a priest in 1949, then went to Rome three years later to study canon law.

While there, he was recruited for diplomatic services for the Holy See.

He became a senior Vatican diplomat, serving in such countries as India, Argentina, Taiwan, Ireland, El Salvador and Burma (Myanmar).

He was deputy Secretary of State at the Vatican in 1985.

Cardinal Cassidy retired recently as president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

Tickets for the breakfast – $12 per person – are available from Ryde City Council’s customer service centre.

Inquiries can be made on (02) 9952 8222.
