Caritas renews call for help as southern Africa faces food crisis

The southern Africa region has a continuing need for assistance as a humanitarian crisis looms, said Caritas Australia’s Africa programs co-ordinator, Wendy Ngoma.

More than 13 million people face starvation in the coming months, with food supplies expected to run out by August, she said.

The food crisis is the result of a combination of factors, including poor farming weather, lack of agricultural funds, lack of food reserves and the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Caritas Australia launched its southern Africa appeal in June but national director Jack de Groot has made a fresh appeal for donations to enable their partners in the region to buy emergency provisions.

He also stressed the need for longer-term efforts of the southern African governments and the international community to prevent such disasters recurring.

To donate, call 1800 024 413, visit www.caritas.org.au or send donations to Caritas Australia, 19 MacKenzie St, North Sydney, 2060.
