Abuse allegations ‘devastating’

Allegations of sexual abuse against Sydney-based St John of God Br Rodger Moloney are devastating, said Br Peter Burke, the Australian provincial.

“It’s a very difficult time for the order and for the whole Church - a tragedy,” he said.

The allegations date back to 1972-77 when Br Moloney was head of the Marylands Special School in Christchurch, New Zealand.

“When the allegations were brought to my notice,” said Br Burke, “we took the appropriate action by asking Br Moloney to stand aside from all ministry and all duties; that has been done.”

Br Moloney had recentlybeen on the St John of God provincial council in Sydney.
