Pax Christi peace vigil extends Pax Christi NSW is set to maintain its weekly peace vigil at Hyde Park in the new year. The group, in conjunction with the Buddhist Peace Fellowship and Women In Black, an international peace network, has been meeting at the Archibald Fountain for a one-hour vigil every week. Those gathered follow the practice of walking meditation, moving around the fountain, pausing occasionally to listen to words of peace and wisdom. Pax Christi is an international Catholic peace organ isation, with more than 60,000 members across the world. Pax Christi NSW has previously raised questions over the legality of Australia’s participation in the conflict in Afghanistan. The group said last month: “This war appears to be ‘undeclared’ on Australia’s part, and this may cause the legality of any military actions our troops undertake in Afghanistan to be questioned. “Pax Christi NSW, along with many other Australians, believe that a formalised legal process is necessary before any engagement in war can be permitted.” Pax Christi International has written to the President of the United Nations Security Council, Mochtar Ouane, requesting that the UN intervene to end the violence in the Middle East. Condemning violence on both sides, Pax Christi said Israeli and Palestinian representatives should return to negotiations based on the framework of international law and all the relevant resolutions and Geneva conventions.
