Salesian superior general dies

The Superior General of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr Juan Edmundo Vecchi, has died.

Fr Vecchi, born in Viedma, Argentina, in 1932, had headed the Salesians since March 1996.

He was diagnosed 19 months ago as having a brain tumour, but this did not prevent him - until very recently - communicating with the 18,000 members of the Salesians and a similar number of Salesian sisters.

His last letter to the Salesians Family, in his own hand, was a meditation on illness and suffering.
