Welfare groups call for release of detainees

The Melbourne-based Catholic Commission of Justice, Development and Peace has sent a strongly worded letter to Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock on behalf of 10 welfare agencies asking him to release Woomera detention centre inmates into their care.

The organisations include the St Vincent de Paul Society, Centacare, Catholic Welfare Australia, the Anglican welfare organisation the Brotherhood of St Laurence and the Uniting Church's Justice and World Mission
