Capuchin Franciscan named as Brisbane auxiliary bishop

Fr Joseph Oudeman (pictured), a Capuchin Franciscan, has been appointed auxiliary bishop to the Brisbane archdiocese.

The Archbishop of Brisbane, Archbishop John Bathersby, welcomed the appointment, saying that

Fr Oudeman “has been associated with this archdiocese over many years, and more recently has done a splendid job as multicultural dean (Dean of Ethnic Chaplains), where he won the respect of chaplains and communities alike”.

He is a person of “deep faith and great compassion” and a worthy replacement for Bishop John Gerry, “whom the Archdiocese will miss greatly”.

Bishop Gerry is expected to retire soon after 27 years as auxiliary bishop.

The new bishop was born at Breda, in the Netherlands, on March 2, 1942, the eldest of five children of Johannes and Johanna Oudeman.

The family migrated here in 1956.

Fr Oudeman was provincial minister of the Capuchins in Australia from 1987 to 1996.

He has also been assistant pastor in the parish of Guardian Angels, Wynnum, since 1997.

Bishop Brian Finnigan, who was consecrated in April, is also an auxiliary bishop to the archdiocese.
