Song offers to ‘carry the flame within’ for John Paul A group of “ordinary Catholics from a country parish” who wanted to do a song about their Pope have produced a CD single, Hey John Paul. The song has already had airplay on a community radio program in Campbelltown. The Bathurst parish musicians and singers who perform are a mix of old, young, indigenous and clerical – one priest (Fr Tim Cahill) – fairly representative of your typical Aussie parish, they say. The CD has been released under the name of Lifeboat 14, which is associated with Eternity Music begun by local singer-songwriter Jane Chifley. Sue Martin, who worked on the CD, says parishioners of St Michael and St John’s Cathedral, Bathurst, have a great love of Pope John Paul II. Some went to World Youth Day in Rome in 2000. The song, written by Jane Chifley, has a contemporary sound and a catchy tune that should appeal to old and young alike, says Sue. Its message is that the Pope cannot possibly do all he probably would like to proclaim the Gospel; it is up to the rest of us to witness to the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Hence the lyrics, which include: We’re on a mission. We’re on a road You are the Captain, You bear the load … And I can run to the One who saves ’Cause I saw you do it first. Hey John Paul, We can finish the race for you Hey John Paul, We can carry the flame within. The single sells for $8, to cover production costs, but it is free to download from www.eternitymusic. com.au The Catholic Weekly has two copies of the CD single to give away to the first two callers to 9550 9411 on Monday, August 26, at 10am.
