Archbishop Pell widens net for Pentecost letter

Archbishop Pell has followed up his Pentecost pastoral letter consultation of high school student leaders with a meeting attended by more than 180 young people from parishes and youth groups in the Sydney archdiocese.

He said that such support by young people was itself a sign of hope for the Catholic Church.

About 60 parishes and more than 30 young people's groups and movements were represented in the meeting.

They said they would like more avenues for young people to express their gifts and creativity within the Church and to have priests addressing suicide and drug and alcohol abuse more often in their homilies. They spoke also of the hope Catholics have in Christ's crucifixion, resurrection and the Eucharist and the belief that chastity is a hopeful choice.

The archbishop's pastoral letter on hope will be issued to parishes and high schools for Pentecost Sunday, May 19.
