Obituary: Lawyer, nun, college principal

Sr Yvonne Benedicta Swift, lawyer and former principal of Sancta Sophia College at Sydney University, has died.

Born in Melbourne in 1912, Sr Yvonne trained as a lawyer before joining the Sisters of the Sacred Heart.

She was principal of Sancta Sophia from 1958 to 1972 but later returned to the law, running her own practice in Chippendale which specialised in criminal law.

Her passion for social justice drove her to represent some of society’s toughest cases.

Requiem Mass celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Kensington by Fr Edmund Campion - with eulogies delivered by Sr Mary Shanahan RSCJ and Judge Linda Ashford - was “a requiem of great joy”, said Barbara Walsh, principal of Sancta Sophia College.
