Sri Lankan fare at Amnesty night

Sri Lankan cuisine will be a feature of a fundraising dinner to celebrate the first anniv ersary of Amnesty International’s Dulwich Hill and Marrickville branch.

Guest speaker will be Fr Brian Gore, who spent many years as a missionary in the Philippines, where he championed the rights of plantation workers and peasants.

His work incurred the displeasure of local authorities during the Marcos regime and led to his being placed under house arrest in 1982, ostensibly on murder charges.

The Columban missionary, however, famously broke in to prison and demanded to be treated as his Filipino colleagues were.

The charges were dropped.

The Marcos regime collapsed a few years later under the weight of non-violent popular political protest.

Fr Brian is now based in Sydney as Columban Director for Justice, Peace and Ecology and regularly addresses church and community groups on the issue of asylum seekers.

His topic at the Amnesty dinner is Human Rights, Morality and Asylum Seekers.

The Amnesty dinner is at the Herb Greedy Hall, 79 Petersham Rd, Marrickville, at 7pm on Saturday, May 4. For details and bookings call 9591 1177 or 9564 1164.
