One in four chance of World Youth Day gig By Marilyn Kerjean The guys from Encounter Christian Band were eagerly awaiting the news from the organisers in Toronto, Canada. Would they be going there in July to perform in the World Youth Day festival program? After all, only 125 acts were being selected out of 500 applications sent from 45 countries. “We sent our application last October or November,” says the band’s spokesman, Paul Elarde. “We were waiting and waiting, because they told us we would be finding out at the end of February.” Then the news came. They had been chosen to perform. “We’re not quite sure what we’ll be doing yet, but we’re very excited,” said Paul. “We are all looking forward to the opportunity to praise and thank our wonderful Godtogether in Toronto, with Bishop Cremin and Archbishop Pell, as well as all our fellow Aussies on pilgrimage.” The World Youth Day festival program features entertainment by young Catholic performers and artists from around the world, including dancers, musicians, actors and street performers, to complement the religious events. Encounter performs regularly at Keller Hall, Our Lady of Fatima, Caringbah. For inquiries, contact Paul Elarde on 0418 248 367 or email avdesign@chilli.net.au
