Bondi schoolchildren go to Galilee

What would you call it? Students from Year 6 to kindy have the answer for principal, Allana Vedder

What would you call a Catholic school that’s close to the sea?

Archbishop Pell has approved the name Galilee for the new primary school at Bondi formed by the amalgamation of St Patrick’s and St Anne’s.

Mrs Allana Vedder, the new school principal, said the name was chosen after consultation with the community.

“It’s most appropriate as our school is so close to the sea at Bondi Beach,” she said.

“The rich symbolism of the name and its association with water, fish and the life of Jesus will also help our students in the development of their faith.

“The name ‘Galilee’ holds a special significance, because so much of Christ’s ministry occurred on the shores of that sea. This is where he called the first of his followers.”

Parish priest, Fr Paul Foley said a new name also helps create a new identity for the community.

Students have given input into the design of a new logo and a new uniform will be ready to wear soon as well.

The new school in Blair St is undergoing the second phase of its building program, which includes refurbished classrooms, a library and an administration area.

“It’s an exhilarating time for everyone in the school community,” said Mrs Vedder.
