Woomera action may be justified, says bishop

Conscientious acts of civil disobedience may be warranted at the Woomera detention centre, says Bishop Pat Power, auxiliary Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn.

They may even be morally required, he said.

The Canberra Times reported that Bishop Power praised the actions of people who took part in protests at the centre over Easter because they drew attention to the cruel treatment of asylum seekers.

Many Australians would have been concerned at scenes of fences being pulled down, but not all the protesters had taken such action.

Damage to property was minor compared with the damage done to vulnerable people “who have been locked up without breaking the law”, he said.
