Oarful day for Riverview

The Riverview crew ... frustrated in their dream to snare the Head of the River title

The disappointment was bitter, but the St Ignatius’ College Riverview crew racing in this year’s Head of the River took their shock loss with the utmost dignity.

This was to be the end of the long drought for St Ignatius; the school’s last Head of the River win had been in 1975.

And the Riverview crew looked like winners nearly all the way. But they were pipped at the post, beaten by half a canvas by the defending champions, The King’s School.

The Riverview boys were gracious in defeat – giving a rousing three cheers for the winners and three more for St Joseph’s, Hunters Hill, who came in third by 1½ lengths.

“It was absolutely moving,” said St Ignatius rowing master Alex Rybak. “They did the school proud.”

The loss hits especially hard as the Riverview crew had remained undefeated in trials and races throughout this year, although they were narrowly beaten by Shore and Kings at the Australian championships last month.
