Dialogue on women in the Church

The Commission for Australian Catholic Women has asked the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference to nominate a diocesan contact to facilitate communication within the dioceses.

“This will facilitate communication … particularly with regard to the implementation of the diocesan proposals and the promotion of the ongoing dialogue on the participation of women in the Church,” the commission chair, Geraldine Hawkes said at the commission’s fourth meeting.

The commission has acknowledged that the dialogue is a key challenge and that it builds on the foundations developed during the Woman and Man research project, which identified “the need to create a range of opportunities in the Church for respectful listening and dialogue concerning the experiences, needs and aspirations of women”.

The commission now has a permanent office in Canberra and a full time admin istrative officer. Mary Moran joins executive officer Therese Vassorotti to make up the commission secretariat.

“The establishment of our full time secretariat has energised the work of the commission,” said Mrs Hawkes.

“We are now able to focus more vigorously on the task being asked of us.”

The commission will meet again in Sydney on October 12.
