Special day of prayer and peace

Australia’s Catholic bishops called for October 11 to be a special day of prayer and peace commemorating the victims of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11.

Speaking at the Synod of Bishops, now in session in Rome, Pope John Paul II called for a national day of prayer in memory of those killed in New York, Washington and Penn sylvania on September 11.

Four Australian bishops, including Sydney’s Archbishop George Pell, are attending the synod.

Archbishop John Bathersby, vice-president of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, said: “This call to prayer provides us with an opportunity to pray once again for those who suffered on that tragic day one month ago, as well as to pray for world peace, lest more innocent lives are lost in the search for justice.

“We do not want to live in a world filled with paranoia, fear, racial hate and vilification.

“Australians are renowned throughout the world for their love of life and it is our passion for life that drives us to pray for world peace.

“Please God, we pray that out of this human tragedy we find a spirit of co-operation that will enable us to address some of the evils of the world such as poverty, injustice and inequality.”
