Murwillumbah welcomes son

Bishop Satterthwaite ordains Fr Michael Alcock

The northern NSW town of Murwillumbah welcomed home one of its sons recently when Michael Alcock returned to be ordained by the Bishop of Lismore, Bishop John Sattherthwaite.

Sacred Heart Church was crammed as the parish celebrated its first ordination since 1982.

Concelebrating – with 48 diocesan priests – was Lismore Coadjutor Bishop Geoff Jarratt, who will become the fifth Bishop of Lismore when Bishop Satterthwaite retires on December 1.

Michael Alcock was born and educated in Murwillumbah, attending Mt St Patrick primary and secondary schools and completing his education at Murwillumbah High School.

He is the only son in a family of four children.

After qualifying to be a teacher, he spent three years travelling overseas before returning to Murwillumbah to teach at Mt St Patrick College.

He commenced studying for the priesthood in 1995 and was ordained deacon in Lismore in February this year.

After a few weeks break, Fr Michael will take up a position as assistant pastor in Lismore Cathedral parish.

Fr Michael, a keen surfer, is also known for his musical talent with his bush band Playing Possum.
