Gleeson Auditorium

One of the Australian Catholic University’s oldest friends has been honoured by having a lecture theatre named after him at the university’s Strathfield campus – the Gerry Gleeson Auditorium.

Cardinal Clancy, Strathfield Mayor Virginia Judge and the ACU Senate were among those present as ACU Chancellor Julian McDonald and vice Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan paid tribute to Mr Gleeson.

Prof Sheehan said: “This is a unique university and it required great skill to build a consensus that such a university was needed and needed to be financed publicly. Gerry Gleeson did that superbly. He marshalled government support for a Catholic university.”

From 1977-88 Mr Gleeson was head of the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, before holding other public service positions.

Through his contacts in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Mr Gleeson was able to enlist support for the university.

He has been on the ACU senate since the university’s founding.

Prof Sheehan commended Mr Gleeson’s “wonderful political acumen combined with deep abiding faith” and loyalty to his Church. “I doubt that, without him, the institute could have got off the ground politically.”
