The Australian Catholic University’s (ACU)
emphasis on clinical competency in nursing has enjoyed a boost with the opening of purpose-built simulated nursing laboratories.
Although the labs have been in use at the university’s MacKillop Campus in
North Sydney since February, the head of the School of Nursing, Dr Cindy Leigh, did not open them officially until recently.
The labs have been set up to represent a working hospital ward, with beds, dummy
patients and medical equipment and facilities (see picture above).
ACU’s nursing programs have a strong emphasis on clinical competencies and the labs offer undergraduates the opportunity to resource a
hospital setting in their program.
The facilities will also be used for postgraduate programs, continuing education and refresher courses, and other community and outreach health activities.
