Women’s forum to celebrate the Good Samaritans’ centenary

High profile ABC personality Caroline Jones (pictured) is to host Voices of St Scholastica’s Women, a national women’s forum in Sydney on Sunday, July 8.

The forum is part of celebrations marking the centenary of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan at Glebe’s Toxteth House. Founded in 1857, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan were the first women’s congregation established in Australia.

After setting up a woman’s refuge in Pitt St, they set up a school then moved to Toxteth House in 1901, where they built a school and a teacher’s training college.

Today’s forum will include a dramatic presentation of the lives of Mother Marcella Kenny, Sr Sarah Octavia Brennan and Sr Clare Slattery all of whom played a key role in women’s education by training other sisters who then educated thousands of Australian women.

Now there are 10 Good Samaritan colleges on Australia’s eastern seaboard and one in Japan.

Superior of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan and deputy chair of the Commission for Australian Catholic Women, Sr Sonia Wagner will deliver the keynote address, challenging the forum to be Women of the Future.
