Red Cross hero of Fiji hostage crisis murdered

John Scott, head of the Red Cross in Suva, Fiji, was found hacked to death in his home earlier this week.

The murder of Mr Scott has shocked Fiji and anybody who knew of the part he played during last year’s three-month long hostage crisis.

Mr Scott negotiated arrangements with hostage-taker George Speight to see that hostages received visits, food and other support from families and friends.

He and his team also saw to the immediate arrangements following the release of the hostages.

A friend of Mr Scott’s had also been hacked to death in the house. No money was taken, although there was cash in the house.
