Bishop Ingham’s installation

Bishop Peter Ingham will be installed as the fourth bishop of Wollongong on July 25 on the Feast of St James.

The reception and solemn Mass to install the new bishop will be held at the large Wollongong Entertainment Centre, so all those who wish can attend.

The Entertainment Centre holds around 4,000 and over 3,500 people are expected to attend the ceremony, including 30 archbishops, 100 priests and religious, and parishioners from throughout the diocese.

The three-hour ceremony will commence at 7pm at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, which will be video-linked to the Entertainment Centre. Bishop Ingham will then lead a short parade to the Entertainment Centre where he will installed as Bishop of Wollongong by the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr George Pell.

The 15-person committee, which has been working to prepare for the big day, chose the Feast of St James for the installation so it would be connected with the celebrations for St James, the first bishop of Jerusalem.

Committee spokesperson, Fr Peter Comensoli, said, “This ties in with the Universal Church and emphasises that this is about the Church, not (just) a personal occasion, a theme Bishop Ingham wholeheartedly supports.”

The installation will be followed by a supper at which parishioners will have the opportunity to meet their new bishop.

Arrangements have been made to transport parishioners from outlying parishes to the Entertainment Centre for the occasion.
