Honours List – let us know

“You’re born into this world a little bit like a rough stone,” last year’s Australian of the Year, Sir Gustav Nossal remembers his father telling him. “The purpose of life is to polish that rough stone until it is a smooth thing of beauty.”

This fatherly advice, as well as the principles imparted by his Jesuit teachers, has continued to inspire Sir Gustav, 68, throughout a distinguished career in science. As Australian of the Year, his views on the cause of Aboriginal reconciliation last year also imparted new respect for our indigenous culture.

If you recognise the names of any Catholics among the 2001 Australia Day Honours lists The Catholic Weekly would like to hear from you. In coming issues we’ll be featuring Australia Day Honours recipients and any assistance provided from our readers in identifying Catholics would be greatly appreciated. Tel: 02 9550 9411.
