Pope John Paul II appoints record number of cardinals

Pope John Paul II has made history with the appointment of 37 new cardinals – the largest number appointed at any one time.

After the death of 12 Cardinals in 2000, the College of Cardinals had reached its lowest level in many years and the new appointments will help bring College numbers up to a more reasonable level.

The new appointees come from across the world and include Indian, Chilean, Brazilian, Colombian and African archbishops. Among the more prominent appointees are Britain’s Archbishop of Westminster, Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, and the 82-year-old American theologian Avery Dulles, son of John Foster Dulles, the former American Secretary of State.
