Cardinal – Envoy for World Day of the Sick

Cardinal Edward Clancy has been appointed official Vatican Envoy for the Vatican’s World Day of the Sick, which is being held in Sydney next month.

The February celebrations will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral and will mark the first time a Vatican World Day of the Sick celebration has been held in Australia.

Australia was chosen for the ninth World Day of the Sick because of its cultural and ethnic wealth.

“The close bond of ecclesial communion transcends distance and fosters the encounter of different cultural identities,” said Pope John Paul II commenting on the decision to have Australia host the event.

The World Day of the Sick will be held on Sunday, February 11. An official Vatican Mass will be held at 2.30pm. The theme for the 2001 celebration is ‘The New Evangelisation and the Dignity of the Suffering Person’.

A conference dealing with the 2001 theme will be held on the day before, Saturday February 10, at which a keynote address will be delivered by Archbishop Javier Lozzano Barragan, President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Healthcare Workers.
