Bringing Ned Kelly to life

Mrs McCabe with a collage depicting Ned Kelly

Domremy College has challenged students in Years 4, 5 and 6 at St Brendan’s Primary School, Annandale, to communicate how they feel through painting.

The Visual Arts Enrichment Day was planned by staff from both schools as part of a transition program for students who will later enrol at Domremy.

The theme for the day was to explore the relationship between figures in landscape through the use of Sidney Nolan’s imagery.

Students were invited to draw aspects of landscape and then paint a collage as a means of communicating an emotional response to places and spaces.

Just as everyone thought Ned Kelly had vanished after the Olympics, the students resurrected his image in their collage work and many landscapes took on a mysterious, even eerie aspect as Kelly was depicted within the Domremy College garden.

Many thanks must be extended to the Domremy Visual Arts Coordinator, Mrs Cathy McCabe, and Louise Robinson, a student from the Australian Catholic University, who worked hard to ensure an enjoyable and successful day for the students.

Some of the comments received from the students were: “I’m glad I came, as high school is such fun, and I loved doing the collage” and “I enjoyed being at Domremy, meeting the girls there and doing such interesting work”.
