Cosgrove pays homage to Alma Mater

Lt General Peter Cosgrove AC, MC

The Chief of Army and former head of Interfet forces in East Timor, Lt Gen Peter Cosgrove AC, MC, (pictured) attributes much of his successful career to the grooming, training, guidance and preparedness he received at his alma mater, Waverley College.

Lt Gen Cosgrove was the guest of honour at Waverley College’s annual presentation concert at Sydney Opera House, which included an inspection of the highly regarded Waverley College Cadet Unit.

“I greatly value the ethos of Waverley College which acknowledges excellence and endeavour through all activities whether it be academic, sport, art, music, cadets or debating.” he said. “However, the College’s philosophy is all about caring for the community and throughout the history of the College, many of its pupils have gone on to serve their community, their country and their society in magnificent fashion.

“To witness the quality of this Waverley College production tonight – from the band and the orchestra, through to the magnificent work of the cadet unit and the guard of honour accorded me – is very gratifying Indeed, they are fine examples of communities within a community.

“To be amongst many of my old classmates here tonight is testament to the fine Waverley traditions, passed on in many cases from father to son.

“Waverley College has a set of values which it asks its students to attest to and those values, such as caring for others and working constructively for the good of the community, will stand the students in good stead throughout their lives.

“My education at Waverley College enabled me to grasp the opportunity to do something positive with my life and I believe the time I spent there gave me the ability to have a chance of expression – of providing the very best opportunity to do something constructive.

“As parents, we have watched and admired our sons’ development under the guidance of caring teachers and other staff and we should be extremely grateful for that.

“The footprints of some of the finest people in the world have trod the boards of Waverley College but none more than many of the young men here tonight.”
