Australia 2001, more selfish but sometimes very generous: Cardinal Clancy’s Australia Day Message

The Anniversary of Federation combines with the beginning of a new millennium to create a significant moment in Australian history. We turn over a new leaf. It is a time to weigh up the past and set a sound course for the future.

One feels that over the past 100 years we have become an increasingly selfish, greedy and litigious society. That remains true, not withstanding the fact that on occasions of crisis many Australians demonstrate rather extraordinary generosity and self-sacrifice. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and although many enjoy the best that this world has to offer in material terms, suffering and misery are the lot for all too many. This is a worldwide phenomenon, and the responsibility of us all, but we are especially answerable for what happens in out own backyard.

It is out of character, I be-lieve, for Australians to be greedy and selfish. Therefore, as we begin this new millennium, and mindful of all that we owe to our forebears, let us re-discover our true selves and strive for a more just, equitable and open-handed society that recognises and respects the dignity and the lawful claims of every human being.

The Church, in response to the Pope’s end of the Jubilee Year message should lead the way.
