Bishops appoint new NCEC chair

By Kathleen Carmody

The new chairman of the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC), Fr Tom Doyle, has promised to sustain the Church’s educational mission when he takes up his new position.

Fr Tom Doyle, from the archdiocese of Melbourne, has been appointed the new chairman for the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC). His appointment was announced last week by the General Secretary of the Australian Bishops’ Conference, Fr Brian V Finnigan.

Fr Doyle, who is currently the chairman and executive director of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria and will retain this position, takes over his new role from Dr Peter Tannock.

The NCEC is responsible for formulating policy at a national level regarding Catholic education.

Fr Doyle praised the work of Dr Tannock and the commission over the past three years, describing its members as both expert and selfless.

“The advances that Catholic education has made in that time is testimony to their work and that of the individual, state and territory commissions,” the new NCEC chairman said.

Fr Doyle said that he could see many challenges in Catholic education today.

“In my role as NCEC chairman I will strive to work with others to sustain the Church’s educational mission, as well as work towards making Catholic education accessible and faithful.”

Fr Doyle has been appointed as chairman for a four-year term, until 2004.
