Language no barrier at World Youth Day

The Jubilee pilgrimage to Rome for World Youth Day last year was one of the greatest moments of his life, says Peakhurst youth worker Damien Kerr.

And now he’s dead keen to join the pilgrimage to the 17th World Youth Day, next year in Toronto, Canada.

Mr Kerr told a Sydney Archdiocese youth information night that despite crowded and simple accommodation and limited bathroom facilities in Rome last year, he had found himself becoming more selfless.

“No matter what language people were speaking, we could all come together in faith,” Mr Kerr said.

Harvest Pilgrimages’ Selina Hashan, said World Youth Day was about the proclamation of faith by young people.

“We are integral to the amazing task the Church has,” Ms Hashan said.

“More than any politician, rock star or sports hero, (Pope John Paul II) is able to talk to young people and they respond.”

She said pilgrims differed from tour ists in that they travelled with a depth of purpose tourists didn’t have. “A pilgrim goes with open hands to give and receive. But you do take a few photos as well.”

World Youth Day celebrations will be in Toronto, Canada on July 22-28, 2002. Contact 1800 819 156 for more information.
